Photo printing guide

How large can I print a photo?

The maximum print size is a relationship between real pixels, target density and how the print will be viewed.

Start with real pixel dimensions

Use the exported file's width and height, not the camera's marketing megapixel number. Cropping may have removed a significant part of the original resolution.

Choose a realistic target DPI

Use 300 DPI for close viewing as a conservative starting point. For wall art or signage, test 200 or 150 DPI and consider the normal viewing distance.

Inspect the image itself

A technically large file can still be soft, noisy or heavily compressed. View important detail at 100% and order a small proof for critical work.
